[Cosmetic Dentistry] What Happens After Dental Implants?

Dental Implants New York, NY

Although most people with missing teeth may understand the long-term benefits of dental implants, all too many avoid treatment as they fear the procedure will be painful or risky. While there is likely to be some level of discomfort following the placement of dental implants, the entire process is made easier by knowing what to expect afterward and how to make a fast recovery.

What to expect after getting dental implants

Each patient is unique, and the restrictions and care requirements provided for each individual after the placement of dental implants will vary. However, there are certain things that are fairly constant. The following is a general overview of what to expect after dental implant surgery.

Oral hygiene

A patient's oral hygiene routine is usually different for several weeks after dental implant surgery. For starters, it is far more essential to practice good oral hygiene during this time. Oral care is likely to be more difficult, as well, as most patients experience increased sensitivity and swelling. There is also a risk of irritating the affected area due to overbrushing, for example. To avoid this, be certain to brush gently, rely upon mouthwash to kill bacteria in hard-to-reach areas and check for any sign of complications often.

Dietary restrictions

Dietary changes are sometimes a more difficult adjustment for patients to make, and they often require planning ahead. For the first week, it is important to stick to soft foods, such as yogurt, muffins, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, soft fruits and cooked vegetables. As time goes by and the swelling and discomfort decrease, food choices will grow, and harder foods can be introduced into the diet. Eventually, the patient should be able to eat the same foods they would eat with natural teeth.

Activity and work

Many cosmetic dentists recommend taking approximately a week off from work to make a full recovery. Returning too early may cause the patient to not perform as well professionally since discomfort is likely to still exist. This may make it harder to communicate with others and focus on the task at hand. Dentists also encourage patients in recovery to avoid physical activities where a blow to the face is a possibility, such as tennis, basketball or lifting weights.

Regular office visits

Dentists generally request that patients come in for regular visits in order to ensure that everything goes smoothly before and after the placement of the implant and artificial tooth or teeth. If any complications develop, then it is important to contact your dentist right away and schedule a visit, as there might be an increased risk of oral infection if the affected area begins to swell or experiences issues of any kind.
