Oral Hygiene: Dental Care for Adults

While both children and adults need to practice good oral hygiene, there are a few additional considerations adults need to keep in mind when it comes to on their oral health. It is essential for persons of every age to gently brush their teeth using a soft-bristled toothbrush at least twice a day, and to gently floss at least once a day in order to remove any food particles that can lead to cavities. Because adults are older and for that reason have been taking care of their teeth longer, they are more prone to certain oral hygiene issues.

How important is oral hygiene?

Oral hygiene is extremely important, especially in adults. As the teeth age, it becomes more important to take proper care of them so that they will last a lifetime. Proper care involves brushing, flossing and seeing a dentist regularly, as well as choosing to eat healthy foods that are high in nutrition to support a healthy mouth.

If an adult does not practice good oral hygiene, their chances of experiencing overall health issues are going to be higher. When the teeth and gums are not properly cleaned, it is possible for bacteria levels to get so high that they can lead to an oral infection. Not having a clean mouth can also lead to the development of certain diseases, like diabetes and heart disease.

According to the Centers for Disease and Control, 27 percent of the adults in the United States have untreated tooth decay and 46 percent of adults aged 30 years or older show signs of gum disease. The following is a short list of things people can do to help ensure their good oral hygiene — use a fluoride toothpaste, immediately rinse after eating foods high in sugars, and drink lots of water.
