What to Expect During Your First Visit to Get Dentures

If you have lost a significant number of teeth or if they are severely damaged, dentures may be an effective treatment option for you. Dentures can help restore your eating and speaking ability while improving your smile and self-esteem. However, if you are considering dentures, you may wonder what to expect during your first appointment and the rest of the denture process.

Assessment and evaluation

The first step in the denture process is to assess and evaluate one's oral health. A dentist or other dental professional will examine the patient's mouth, teeth, and gums to determine the best course of treatment. They may take X-rays, impressions, and mouth measurements to create a personalized treatment plan that suits the patient's needs. They will also discuss the various types of dentures and help the individual choose the most effective option that fits their unique needs. These options include the following:

  • Full dentures: Also known as complete dentures, full dentures replace all of a person's natural teeth on the upper or lower jaws. They consist of a gum-colored acrylic base that holds replacement teeth in place with suction or dental adhesives.
  • Partial dentures: Partial dentures are effective for people with only some missing teeth. Metal or acrylic frameworks support the replacement teeth by attaching them to the remaining natural teeth with metal or plastic clasps.
  • Implant-supported dentures: These dentures are supported by dental implants, which are surgically inserted into the patient's jawbone. Dentures like these are more secure and stable than traditional dentures and can replace one or both arches of teeth.

Designing the dentures

Once the dentist has assessed the patient's oral health, they will start making the dentures. Depending on the type of dentures a person needs, the process can take a few weeks to several months. For example, if the patient chooses implant-supported dentures, their jawbone must fuse with the titanium posts before the denture placement. This process is known as osseointegration.

During this waiting period, the dentist may take more impressions and measurements of the individual's mouth to create custom-made dentures that fit comfortably and securely. They may also take a mold of the patient's jaw and teeth to ensure a perfect fit.

Finally, the dentist will work with an off-site dental lab to create the dentures. The patient may need to go to several appointments to ensure the fit is comfortable and allows them to maintain a high quality of life.

Fitting the dentures

Once the dentures are ready, the dentist will schedule an appointment for the patient to try them on. The dental professional will ensure the dentures fit properly and comfortably during this appointment. They may also make minor adjustments as needed. The dentist will also provide instructions on caring for the new dentures and using them properly. They may also recommend using a denture adhesive to help keep the dentures in place.

Adjusting to new dentures

Adjusting to dentures can take some time. People may experience minor discomfort or soreness at first. The dentist will provide instructions on adjusting to the new dentures, including how to eat, speak, and clean them properly. Most people may need to start with soft foods and gradually introduce harder or chewier foods as they get used to the dentures. The dentist may also recommend using a special cleaning solution or brush to clean the dentures. Finally, they can schedule follow-up appointments to ensure that the dentures continue to fit properly and make minor adjustments.
