How are Dental Implants Attached to Your Mouth?

As dentistry has progressed significantly over time, people are now discovering more and more ways to achieve restoration from teeth that are damaged. And, with the help of dental implants, a person can do just that!

Aside from restoration, these dental appliances also work great to replace missing teeth. But, a lot of people may be wondering how dental implants work exactly, along with how these implants are attached to the mouth.

With the help of this article, you will be able to understand what dental implants are, how they can help and how they are attached to your mouth.

Dental implants

Dental implants are biocompatible titanium dental appliances that are placed in order to act as the structure of a tooth. These screw shaped surgical components are used to support an artificial tooth that will be placed after healing and bonding have both occurred.

How do dental implants work?

These small appliances work to support an artificial tooth that will be placed later on. The artificial tooth will be either a dental crown or implant-supported denture and it will be attached to the top of the implant. The implant keeps the artificial tooth secured in place so that a person can eat naturally or smile confidently again.

How dental implants attach to the mouth

There are a few steps that go into attaching the implant into one’s mouth, read more below as we outline them.

- An oral surgeon will cut into the gums so that the natural bone is exposed.

- A hole will be drilled or lasered into the bone, and then the implant will be carefully placed in the hole that was made.

- The oral surgeon may take x-rays to ensure that the implant is sitting correctly. And then, the gums will be stitched back over the hole and implant.

A temporary partial denture or bridge may be provided as well in order for the person to be able to function normally. After the implant is placed, the person will have to go through a period of healing and bonding. This can often take up to six months depending on how quickly a person heals and how many implants were placed. However, this phase is crucial in order for the artificial tooth to be later placed.

After healing and bonding have been achieved, the person will return to the oral surgeon. The gums will again be cut open in order for a part of the implant to be removed and replaced with a protective cap. The protective cap sits atop the gums and allows for the gums to heal around the shape of it so that the artificial tooth will have room to be attached later.

Once the gums heal, the person is then ready for the artificial tooth to take place of the protective cap. The artificial tooth will be attached to the implant and then a person can be on their way to full functionality.
